famous clothing brands and their logos.

Ever dreamt of having your own clothing brand? Celebrities and sports stars urging for an endorsement or a role in your brand’s latest global campaign? Masses flocking to your store every season for the latest product drop? Consumers having pride in knowing that they are accepted by and associated with your brand?

To win the hearts and patronage of fashion consumers in the internet age is a complex sport, the industry is quite saturated because of the low barriers of entry which is caused by the surge of user-friendly e-commerce sites and the increasing acceptance of online shopping.

A clothing brand's success ultimately lies in the value that it creates for its customers. This value can take many forms and it often depends on the nature of the clothing brand and the needs of their consumers. Luxury brand consumers value the prestige, exclusiveness and high status lifestyle associated with brands like These Magugu, MaXhosa by Laduma, Rich Mnisi and Cultish. At the other end of the fashion-brand spectrum, brands like Mr.Price and the online shopping sensation, Shein, provide value by offering moderate quality products that are affordable and adapting to constantly changing global fashion trends. Brands that consistently cater to a particular group of customer's needs have the opportunity to optimize this perceived value, eventually reaping the financial rewards and creating profitable businesses that can be sustained over numerous generations.

Literally, anyone passionate and persistent enough can create a successful clothing brand,  although it takes great skill, research, knowledge and most importantly, an encompassing vision that other people can relate to and/or claim as their own.

What is a clothing brand?

A clothing brand primarily exists to provide garments that are primarily functional or relating to particular lifestyles and occasions. The history of fashion brands as we know them today dates back to the 19th century couturiers (designers), who made highly detailed, and expensive garments for elite women in the western society. The early pioneers of these fashion consist of names like Charles Frederick Worth, Paul Poiret, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel (famously known as Coco Chanel) and Elsa Schiaparelli among others and they dominated the scene in the late 19th century setting blueprint for many of the highly acclaimed fashion brands that spanned over decades, and for some over more than fifty years. These couturiers eventually became as famous as their clothes were, they were perceived as visionaries, their status and influence rose to those of the elite and they became celebrities in their own right. They embodied their own ideas by interpreting fashion in their own unique way, ultimately creating long-lasting fashion brands that many generations relate to.

The brands (the designer’s name) morphed into fashion houses that were run like a combination between a little factory and an artist studio,  consisting of seamstresses and other related workers that contributed towards bringing the designer’s ideas to life. These fashion houses later sought to cater for the masses by creating less expensive garments that appeal to a larger middle-income demographic, and also by creating accessories and perfumes that are accessible to a wide variety of consumers.

Modern-day brands work within a similar ecosystem, except, many of today's manufacturing process is outsourced to countries like China because of their inexpensive labor,  and fast turnaround times. Various products other than clothing items can be created from fashion brands. Furniture, beauty products and many other types of products unrelated to fashion, provide an extension of the brand further beyond its primary offerings.

Starting A Clothing Brand From Scratch

The Vision

A fashion forward man looking into the future.

A brand really has more psychological real estate rather than anything else with regard to customer loyalty and customer retainership. Your core customers are truly your pot-of-gold, because they will stand for you in places that you can not reach and praise your name as if you were royalty. It does not matter whether it's fifty core customers or a million core customers, the imperative lies in the relationship you keep with these customers, the value you provide for these customers, and your ability to create an environment for them to keep coming for more.

A clothing brand has to first consider its vision for the world and establish a position as being the captain of the ship that sails toward this direction. This vision for the brand must then be presented to the world, to your partners and investors, to your customers, to your community and most importantly, to your employees and anyone else that helps materialize your vision. The brand must believe in something, it must address the needs and/or voice the opinions of a particular culture, it must present unique ideas and create its own space in the universe, it must realize its purpose, have a clear direction and shape its own future, it must be a symbol of progress!

Brand Identity

A strong clothing brand consists of elements that are easily identifiable to its audience and the larger public. Some of these brand elements are tangible aspects like the logo, graphics, typefaces and fonts that are unique to the brand, slogans, phrases, store layout, employees and the brand’s actual products. Intangible aspects of these brand elements may include the brands overall voice and aesthetic, the ideas and aspirations for the brand, and the brands’ association with external stakeholders like its immediate communities and its relationships with other industry related organizations. The ultimate purpose of creating a strong brand identity is to position the clothing brand in the minds of consumers, establishing a place in some sort of hierarchy with regards to market activity and competing with other brands. All of these brand elements must work harmoniously with each other to become a real force in the industry, they must be continually assessed and optimized to ensure that they communicate the brand’s vision and represent the aspirations of its consumers.

Product development

Consumers have particular needs and they generally seek to fulfill these needs by immersing themselves with many of the products and services offered in this world. One clothing brand cannot satisfy the needs of every consumer, therefore it is advisable to identify a group of consumers that share similar needs and create products and services that particularly cater to the unique needs of these group consumers.

Business Model

A business model showing how a clothing brand achieves growth.

A clothing brand must adhere to some form of system and processes in order to build a highly functioning and sustainable business. These systems and processes consist of the activities involved in sourcing and procuring materials and inputs required to manufacture products, the storing and distribution of these products to the consumer through physical retail stores and online shopping platforms, and the marketing activities involved in promoting the use of the clothing brand’s products. A clothing brand must cultivate its working environment, creating an ecosystem that promotes efficiency in the clothing brand’s daily operations and one that strives to constantly improve productivity. A clothing brand can either internally handle its own manufacturing and other above-mentioned activities, or rely on other industry organizations to form strategic partnerships and relationships with external parties that can provide an advantage for the clothing brand. The choice of the business model will be heavily guided by the brand’s vision and intended business strategies, and by considering the competence and the overall capabilities of the clothing brand as a business.

E-Commerce and Retailing

The internet has impacted many facets of the clothing business, making it much less difficult to reach a larger audience without paying exorbitant fees for advertising space on traditional platforms like tv, radio and billboards. In this internet age, the smartphone is probably the most popular device used around the world, it has become the primary source for consuming media content and increasingly becoming a safe and simple way for consumers to purchase products.

A clothing brand must invest in a website as it provides an alternative retail space for reaching potential customers. Think of the clothing brand’s website as a shop inside the mall, except in this case, the shopping mall is actually the whole internet, and clothing brands pay rent to website developers/platforms in order to create and maintain this online shop. The website must be easy to navigate for the customer and it must be optimized for ecommerce so that payment processes run smoothly and that all orders are correctly fulfilled. E-commerce platforms like Shopify, Wix, Squarespace (and many more) provide affordable plans for building these websites and you may try and test a few platforms before you prefer one that is specifically tailored for your business, or you may choose to outsource a web developer to design a unique website or mobile applications for the clothing brand.

Once a clothing brand has its own website, the challenge lies in redirecting traffic from the clothing brands social media, email list and other marketing channels to the brand's website for optimum results. Major online clothing retailers like Superbalist.com lure in customers through social media by offering sizable discounts for the customers’ first purchase, creating a tempting first encounter, and further exposing these customers to the benefits of shopping with the online retailer. The difference between selling five units every month and selling one thousand units (or higher) every month depends on how much traffic flows to the clothing brand’s website and how much of that traffic actually completes the checkout phase, ultimately purchasing a product from your online store. The phrase ‘content is king’ refers to this situation, whereas clothing brand’s must build a consistent social media presence primarily focused on increasing its brand awareness among consumers, creating content that is engaging and relevant to potential consumers. This content can take the form of social media posts, video reels, youtube videos, testimonials from current consumers, etc., which can be spread through various social media platforms by method of thoughtful marketing campaigns. Organic traffic is generated through the clothing brand’s regular marketing efforts and daily online activity, and this is the preferred method because the brand marketing messages reaches a wider audience without spending any money for advertising space on these platforms. The other kind of traffic can be generated through paid traffic which usually means paying for Facebook and Instagram adverts, or paying other platforms like social media accounts that have an enticing audience that is similar to your customer’s profile or by affiliate marketing and paying celebrities and influencers to promote your clothing brand. It is advisable that clothing brands consistently create compelling online content that spreads across various internet platforms, this will help to absorb as much organic traffic as possible, and it will help reduce marketing costs while achieving the desired sales target.

All elements of the clothing brand must operate in harmony in order for the business to thrive in a highly competitive environment. Ideas and vision for the future should inspire the direction for the clothing brand, creating a journey that is encompassing, one that is worth believing-in, relating to the needs of your employees, customers and business partners. The marriage of an overtly creative environment and sharp business acumen is key for a winning formula, and ideas that have structure can be developed and perfected to create a successful clothing brand in 2022.
